Left-Hand Swordsman
A mentor of mine once told me this Chinese Kung-Fu parable about a Master Swordsman who was so skilled in the martial arts that he rise up the ranks of the martial arts world and become the Chief Master Swordsman.
Then in typical Chinese Kung Fu style, an evil swordsman turned up one day to challenge all the swordsmen to a duel. He defeated them one by one until only the Chief Master Swordsman was left.
In typical Chinese Kung Fu style, they met up on the mountain and had the final duel. The evil swordsman was so good that he inflicted a mortal wound to the Master Swordsman.
In typical Chinese Kung Fu style, before the Master Swordsman died, he instructed his son to take revenge for him and restore honor back to their family. He told his son to go up to a certain mountain to look for his retired uncle who will be able to impart to him the skills necessary to defeat the Evil Swordsman.
And so the son did. He went all the way up the mountain and finally located the uncle. But the uncle had already left the martial arts world and wanted nothing more to do with the affairs of this world.
Then in typical Chinese Kung Fu style,the son knelt outside the uncle’s house for days waiting for the uncle to help him. He refused.
Then came the typical stormy night and as the uncle watched that young man kneeling in the rain, he softened and finally let him into the house.
He told the young man, I have retired from all these but I will only help you on one condition. The condition is this: “You just trust me completely and do everything I tell you to do.” The nephew agreed.
Then the old man threw him a sword and they sparred. Then in the midst of their sparring, the uncle unexpectedly chopped off the nephew’s right hand!
The young man was shocked. He started screaming! What have you done? You have chopped off my right hand. All the hopes I ever had of taking revenge is now gone! What have you done!
The uncle turned to him and said: “I thought you agreed to trust me completely? And you will do everything I tell you to do?” That was when the uncle took out a manual on “Left Hand Swords Play”.
For the next two years, the young man learnt how to fight with his left hand. The day came when he had mastered the skills. Then in typical Chinese Kung Fu style, the young man came downhill and he went in search of the Evil Swordsman.
They finally met again ion the same hill. They fought and the young left-handed swordsman finally defeated the Evil Swordsman and regained the kingdom for his family.
That was when he understood what the uncle was doing. The Evil Swordsman had mastered the art of defeating all right-handed swordsman but he had no answer to someone who fights with the left hand. That was why he was defeated.
What is the moral of the story? - I am sure that there are many lessons you can draw from here. The main one I want to share with you is this:
There are times when we need to come out of our comfort zone – the right handed stuff and begin to do the left handed stuff that often is what we need to do damage to the kingdom of darkness.
For many of us, living by the power of the soul is a right-handed thing that we have been used to all of our lives. It is time for us to lay down our right hand and give God our left-hand that He may train us to walk in the power of the Spirit.
But I believe that God is calling together a company of Left Handed Swordsman for this season to do great exploits in the Spirit.
